How to start a good conversation with a stranger
Published
Saying hello is easy. Keeping a conversation going takes a little more. These ideas help.
Ask open questions
"Do you like music?" gets a yes or no. "What have you been listening to lately?" gets a story. Questions that start with what, how or why give the other person room to talk.
Share something about yourself
A chat is a two-way street. After you ask a question, add a line about your own answer. It makes you easier to talk to and gives them something to reply to.
Be curious about where they are
Chatting with people from other countries is the best part of a site like this. Ask about their food, their weather, a festival they like. People enjoy explaining their home.
Match their energy
If they write short messages, do not send an essay. If they are enthusiastic, enthusiasm back goes a long way.
Be patient and kind
People type at different speeds and may be using a second language. A friendly tone matters more than perfect spelling.
Know when to move on
Not every chat clicks, and that is fine. Press Next or switch rooms. If someone is rude, use Block and Report instead of arguing.
Try a topic room such as Hangout, Music or Travel to find people who share your interests.
