How to stay safe in anonymous chat
Published
Anonymous chat is a great way to meet people from other countries, practise a language or just pass the time. A few habits keep it that way.
1. Keep personal details private
Your real name, address, school, workplace and phone number are none of a stranger's business. Pick a username that does not give them away, and do not reuse it on other sites.
2. Think before you share a photo
Anything you send can be saved, screenshotted or forwarded. Only send images you would be comfortable with the other person keeping forever. On chatpoo, received images are blurred until you tap them, and you get a reminder before you send one.
3. Be careful with links
Do not open links from people you do not know. They can lead to scams or sites that steal passwords. If someone pressures you to click quickly, that is a warning sign.
4. Never send money
Anyone who asks for money, gift cards or "a small favour" is trying to scam you, however friendly they seem.
5. Use the tools
Press Block to stop someone messaging you and to hide their messages. Use Report to alert the moderators. You can leave any chat or press Next at any time. You never owe a stranger a reply.
6. Trust your instincts
If a conversation feels wrong, leave. You do not need a reason.
7. Adults only
chatpoo is for people aged 18 and over. Anyone reported as a minor is suspended straight away while we check. If you are under 18, please leave.
